Damp… A problem in Spain.

Whilst we are fortunate on the Costa Blanca to have an average of 300 days of sunshine a year, when it rains…It rains a lot! So, our homes get damp.

With our hot summers and heavy rainfalls these extremes in weather are the cause of many a crack in roof tiles and walls. This results in damp seeping into our homes. Most Spanish homes do not have damp course fitted as standard and therefore, rising damp and condensation build up. Poorly fitted windows or low quality windows with hot air conditioning; this combination only adds to making homes feel more humid and breeds mould. Plus insufficient or no ventilation in the walls merely adds to the problem.

This creates two problems – one, damage to a property through rising damp, two – comfort and health issues through the build-up of condensation.
When you open up a room do you smell the mustiness of damp walls? Flaking plaster, bubbling paint work and spots of mould make rooms impossible to live in. These symptoms are the result of years of damp ingress and are the result of Rising Damp. This stage of damage requires thorough corrective action in order to prevent total dilapidation of these sections of the house.

Condensation is a major cause of dampness in buildings and is nearly always associated with black mould. Health problems associated with black mold include allergic reactions, asthma episodes, irritations of the eye, nose and throat, sinus congestion, and other respiratory problems
The problem arises because of high relative humidity, a lack of natural ventilation and in most cases, cold external walls. Sometimes it’s possible to reduce humidity by regulating activities like drying clothes outdoors. Ventilation can be provided via trickle vents which can often eliminate condensation issues. Walls can be insulated without disturbing the occupants with an exterior insulation.
